How a reverse salary calculator works
A normal salary calculator starts with gross pay and subtracts tax. A reverse salary calculator does the opposite: it starts with the net amount you want and searches for the gross salary that produces it. There is no simple “divide by 0.7” formula because Australian income tax is progressive, the low income tax offset phases out, the Medicare levy has a low-income reduction, and HELP repayments change with income.
Instead, the calculator runs the full 2026–27 tax calculation many times. It tests a low gross figure and a high gross figure, narrows the range, and repeats until the after-tax result is within a few cents of your target. The answer is then rounded up to the nearest dollar so your target is met rather than missed.
Gross salary ≠ target ÷ (1 − tax rate). Progressive brackets mean the effective tax rate changes as income rises, so iteration is the reliable method.
Gross salary, net salary and total package
These three numbers are easy to mix up, and mixing them up can make a job offer look better or worse than it is.
- Gross salary is your base pay before tax, Medicare and HELP. It is the figure normally quoted in a job advertisement.
- Net salary (take-home pay) is what remains after those deductions and what actually reaches your bank account.
- Total package is the employer’s full cost: gross salary plus employer superannuation, and sometimes a car, phone or other benefits.
Employer super is not part of your take-home pay. If a contract quotes a package that includes super, the base salary is lower than the package figure. Switch on “Package includes super” to solve on that basis; the calculator will show both the package and the base salary inside it.
Why your required gross salary might be higher than expected
Several things push the required gross figure above a simple tax estimate. The Medicare levy adds 2% for most residents. A HELP debt adds a marginal repayment that starts at 15 cents per dollar above $69,528 in 2026–27 and rises at higher incomes. Salary sacrifice, novated leases and additional super contributions reduce taxable income in ways this calculator does not model. Bonuses, overtime and investment income also change your final tax position.
The calculator also assumes you claim the full tax-free threshold and are an Australian resident for tax purposes. Foreign residents, working holiday makers and people claiming the threshold on another job have different withholding and should use the mainAustralian salary calculator for those modes.
Reverse salary examples for 2026–27
These examples show the gross salary needed for a monthly take-home target, assuming a resident taxpayer, the Medicare levy, no HELP debt and super paid on top.
| Monthly take-home | Gross salary needed | Annual tax + Medicare | Annual take-home |
|---|---|---|---|
| $4,000 | $56,422 | $8,421 | $48,001 |
| $5,000 | $74,295 | $14,294 | $60,001 |
| $6,000 | $91,942 | $19,941 | $72,001 |
| $8,000 | $127,236 | $31,236 | $96,000 |
| $10,000 | $165,689 | $45,689 | $120,000 |
Figures are rounded up to the nearest dollar. They exclude super from take-home, do not include HELP and assume no deductions or other income.
Using the result in a pay negotiation
Treat the required gross salary as a floor, not a precise offer. Employers usually quote base salary before super, and some quote a package that includes super. Ask which basis is being used. If the offer includes super, compare it with the package figure in the result panel. If you have a HELP debt or salary sacrifice arrangement, switch those on before comparing.
To check the other direction, enter the offered salary in the salary calculator. To see what an hourly rate is worth as an annual salary, use the hourly to salary calculator. For part-time or part-year roles, thepro rata salary calculator adjusts a full-time salary to your actual pattern.
Questions
Reverse Salary Calculator Australia FAQs
Quick answers about how this calculator works and what it includes.
How does a reverse salary calculator work?
It tests gross salary figures until the after-tax result matches your target. Australia’s income tax is progressive and includes offsets and levies, so there is no single percentage you can divide by. The calculator runs the full tax calculation repeatedly and finds the lowest gross salary that produces your desired take-home pay.
Should my target include superannuation?
Take-home pay never includes employer super, because super is paid into your fund rather than your bank account. If your target is the cash you want to receive, leave the super switch off. If your employer quotes a total package that includes super, turn the switch on and the calculator will separate the base salary from the super component.
Does the reverse calculator include HELP repayments?
Only if you switch on the HECS/HELP option. A HELP debt reduces your take-home pay, so the gross salary needed to reach the same target will be higher. The repayment uses the 2026–27 marginal HELP thresholds.
Why is the gross salary so much higher than my target?
Income tax is progressive, the Medicare levy adds 2%, and HELP repayments can add another slice at higher incomes. A $6,000 monthly take-home target, for example, requires a notably higher gross salary because tax is withheld before the money reaches you. Super does not reduce your take-home when it is paid on top, but it does increase the employer’s total cost.
Can I use this for a job offer negotiation?
Yes. Enter the after-tax amount you need each month, then compare the required gross salary with the offer. Remember that salary sacrifice, novated leases, additional super contributions, deductions and other income all change the result. Use the figure as a starting point and confirm the final package with your employer or tax agent.
What assumptions does the calculator make?
It assumes a 2026–27 Australian resident for tax purposes, the standard tax-free threshold, no dependants, no private health insurance rebate adjustments, no deductions and no other income. It applies resident tax rates, LITO, the Medicare levy and optional HELP. Results are estimates, not financial advice.
