How to convert an hourly rate to a salary

To turn an hourly rate into an annual salary, multiply the rate by the hours you work each week, then by the number of weeks you work in a year. For a full-time role that is usually 38 hours × 52 weeks = 1,976 hours a year.

Annual salary = hourly rate × hours per week × weeks per year

At $35 an hour, the calculation is $35 × 38 × 52 = $69,160. Divide that by 12 for the monthly equivalent, by 26 for fortnightly pay, or by 52 for weekly pay. The calculator does all of this at once and also shows the daily amount based on a five-day week.

If you work a different pattern, change the hours and weeks fields. A part-time employee working 20 hours a week, for example, would use 20 hours instead of 38. Someone working 46 weeks a year because of extended unpaid leave would use 46 weeks. The annual figure is afull-year equivalent at that rate and pattern, not a guarantee of paid hours.

Casual loading versus a permanent salary

Casual employees are usually paid a casual loading instead of paid leave and other entitlements. A 25% loading is common under awards and the national minimum wage order, although some awards set a different rate. Turning on the casual loading in this calculator increases the hourly rate by 25% before converting it to an annual figure.

A casual rate can look higher than a permanent rate for the same job, but it is not a straight pay rise. Casuals generally do not receive paid annual leave, paid personal/carer’s leave, notice of termination or redundancy pay. They may also have less predictable hours. Compare the total package, not just the headline rate. A permanent employee on a lower hourly rate may receive four weeks of paid annual leave and paid personal leave, which are valuable entitlements.

Tax, Medicare and super on an hourly rate

The gross annual figure is not what lands in your bank account. This calculator applies the 2026–27 resident tax rates, the low income tax offset, the 2% Medicare levy and any HELP repayment you switch on. It assumes no work-related deductions, salary sacrifice, investment income or other earnings.

Employer superannuation is shown separately. The super guarantee is 12% from 1 July 2025 and is paid on top of ordinary time earnings, subject to the maximum contribution base ($270,830 for 2026–27). Super is not spendable take-home pay today, but it is part of the real value of a job. For a full take-home breakdown with more circumstances, use theAustralian salary calculator.

Questions

Hourly to Salary Calculator Australia FAQs

Quick answers about how this calculator works and what it includes.

How do you convert an hourly rate to an annual salary?

Multiply the hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then multiply by 52 weeks. For a standard 38-hour week at $35 an hour, the annual salary is $35 × 38 × 52 = $69,160 before tax.

Should I use 52 weeks or 52.14 weeks?

Most Australian salary conversions use 52 weeks because pay cycles are based on a 52-week year. Using 52.14 weeks accounts for the extra quarter-day in a calendar year, but it rarely changes an advertised salary. This calculator uses 52 weeks and lets you change the weeks per year if you need a different basis.

What is the casual loading in Australia?

Casual employees are usually paid a casual loading instead of paid leave and other entitlements. A 25% loading is common under awards and the national minimum wage order, though some awards specify a different rate. This calculator can add 25% to the hourly rate before converting it to an annual figure.

Is super included in the annual salary?

Usually not. Australian salaries are generally quoted as base salary before employer superannuation. The 12% super guarantee is paid on top, subject to the maximum contribution base. If your contract quotes a total package that includes super, use the main salary calculator and switch on “Include super in salary”.

How much tax will I pay on an hourly rate?

The calculator applies 2026–27 resident tax rates, the low income tax offset, the 2% Medicare levy and any HELP repayment you enable. It assumes you are an Australian resident for tax purposes and does not include deductions, salary sacrifice or other income.

What is the difference between hourly and salary pay?

An hourly rate pays you for the hours you actually work, so pay can vary with your roster and overtime. A salary is a fixed annual amount, usually paid in equal instalments, and may include paid leave and other entitlements. The annual equivalent is a useful comparison, but it does not capture every difference in conditions.
